Welcome New Subscribers

A quick note to those who joined up in the last day.

I very rarely deviate from my once weekly newsletter — in large part because I know that we all get too many emails clogging our inboxes. But, I wanted to make an exception given the pretty big bump (for me) in subscribers yesterday.

For some reason a quick note I wrote about supporting Ukraine caught on. It was kind of crazy — the closest I’ve ever come to my phone blowing up — with 8k likes, almost 5k restacks and about 130 new subscribers — all of which is big for me.

If you subscribed you should have received a welcome email, but I wrote that way back in January when I launched Feed After Midnight which is approximately 22 years ago in Trump-adjusted days.

Things have evolved since then and I just wanted to give a brief overview of what you can expect each week. The newsletter comes out every Tuesday — usually morning unless I am doing something time-sensitive at the last minute. I lead with politics, sometimes some hot takes on multiple subjects, or maybe a deeper dive into one issue that’s been gnawing at me.

I also link out to articles/essays/rants that I post between editions of the newsletter. I’ve been trying to do that more on the really long stuff as to less overwhelm folks getting the email.

Here’s an example of an essay I wrote on the Trump/Putin connection, some dark satire on Gaza, Trump’s corruption, and one on his first 100 Days. Spoiler alert on all: I’m not a big fan of everything that’s going down.

Each week there’s also always some pop culture — movies, music, TV, etc. I know it’s less read than the political stuff, but it makes me happy writing it, which I think is something we all should be doing (stuff you love) in this new era to take the edge off the existential dread.

That’s about it.

I tried to follow back as many people as possible yesterday and will take some time to scroll back and hit folks I missed. They say Substack doesn’t use a traditional algorithm and is more true to people reading and sharing content. That certainly rang true yesterday, but I also have times where I get very few new free subscribers.

PS — I don’t have an editor, other than my lovely wife when she has time. And I’m known for making stupid typos and mistakes and not catching them. Please point out anything you see in the comments. It doesn’t hurt my feelings at all and would love to correct things.
