POLI•RANT: Religion v Morality
Something political that's longer than a post & shorter than an essay.
I don't care about religion, I care about morality and character.
Since the death of President Carter, I’ve been reminded many times what a deeply religious and spiritual man he was, and how his beliefs (grounded in the teachings of Jesus) informed and guided his politics.
Which made me then think of President Biden who — while a different denomination — is much the same person as Carter.
It’s simply amazing that the two most genuinely religious presidents of the last 50+ years — Carter and Biden — were both roundly rejected by the most vocal and politically active so called "Christians."
And yet, they idolize a man (a Golden Cow?) who should literally BURST into flames upon walking into a church.
The political power of these White Christian Nationalists is not a laughing matter. It’s at the intersection of many (if not most) of the deeply frightening things happening in our country. It’s a theme that I think a lot about and I’m sure will be writing about here.
But, as a deeply good man leaves this Earth and a deeply bad man comes back to power, I can’t help but to be both saddened and baffled at how pathetic it all is.
To paraphrase an old movie quote: If Jesus came back down to Earth and saw what was being done in his name...he'd never stop throwing up.
