I was only 10 when this album came out. And while I can’t be positive, I’m pretty sure I remember it at the time. It was one of the trove of albums that my aunt gave me which was kind of the bedrock of my musical upbringing. As I listened to it in my teens “The Logical Song” had a big influence on my political beliefs — the first song I can remember that did.
Beyond the singles this jazz-tinged pop album is just filled with hook, great musicianship, and a clean, crisp production. It also benefits from Supertramp having two lead singers in baritone Rick Davies and the wonderful falsetto of Roger Hodgson.
No doubt this album suffered from classic rock overplay, especially the singles. I hadn’t listened to the whole thing in decades until recently and was surprised at how good it stands up after a little distance.
