I didn’t get into XTC until Oranges & Lemons was released in 1989. I loved it for the obvious reason that it was just pure Beatles pop. I remember buying Skylarking not long after, but for some reason didn’t listen to it that much.
In the years since I rediscovered Skylarking and it’s become an album that I revisit pretty often. It’s just (again) pop perfection with a series of songs that segue into each other with sharp, pristine instruments and lush orchestration.
Apparently producer Todd Rundgren (himself no stranger to Beatlesque pop) and the band fought like cats and dogs making the album. You wouldn’t know it from the results. Enjoy!
I've just discovered XTC this past month, and it's been glorious. I think my favourite studio album is Black Sea, but Skylarking is an extremely-close second.
